The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has invested heavily in education since its formation and the number of higher education institutions has seen consistent growth over the decades. Saudi Arabia offers a number of world-class universities which grant bachelor’s, master’s and Ph.D. degrees; lasting 4 years, 2 years, and 3 to 4 years respectively. In this article, we will outline the best and top universities in one of the most vital cities of the kingdom, Jeddah city.

King Abdulaziz University

King Abdulaziz University (KAU) is first in the 2021 Arab rankings and places joint 143rd in the world rankings. KAU was founded in 1967 and now it has more than 82,000 students, with separate campuses for men and women. The campuses are located in the city of Jeddah and designed by well-known English architect John Elliott.

In 2017, King Abdulaziz University featured in the top 150 of the QS World University Rankings by Subject for mechanical engineering, agriculture & forestry and pharmacy. King Abdulaziz University offers faculties in a wide range of subject areas, including art and design, humanities, sciences, medicine, pharmacy, business, law and dentistry. As well as offering a range of on-campus undergraduate and graduate programs, King Abdulaziz University also teaches a distance learning program. This university is the most prestigious university in the whole kingdom of Saudi Arabia and definitely on the top list of Jeddah universities.

 

King Abdullah University for Science and Technology

King Abdullah University for Science and Technology was established in 2009 and since then it positioned itself in the top 10 universities of Saudi Arabia. The university ranks 8 in the national rating of the kingdom. It is renowned for the following programs: Engineering & Technology, Natural Science, Chemistry and Computer Science.

With 700 students attending King Abdullah University for Science and Technology; this puts it in the group of small universities in the classification. This university could be called a truly international educational institution as there are more foreign students than local ones (71%).

 

Ibn Sina National College for Medical Studies

Founded in 1980, Ibn Sina National College for Medical Studies is, without a doubt, one of the most prestigious universities of Saudi Arabia sitting comfortably among the top 40 universities of the country. Ibn Sina National College for Medical Studies has an urban campus in Jeddah. The university is quite small, with 3000 students attending its classes. Foreign citizens can also apply to the college.

It is important to mention that the applicants are evaluated based on the previous academic performance. The majority of applicants who submitted their application to Ibn Sina National College for Medical Studies successfully enroll, as the competition is 90 accepted students per 100 applicants. The academic year in Ibn Sina National College for Medical Studies is divided into 2 academic semesters.

 

Dar Al-Hekma University

Dar Al-Hekma University is a private higher education institution in Saudi Arabia. The campus is located in Jeddah and it is in the top 5 universities of Saudi Arabia according to the national rankings. Since its establishment in 1999, Dar Al-Hekma University has positioned itself as the leading private, non-profit, higher education institution for young women in Saudi Arabia.

Dar Al-Hekma University comprises four main schools: School of Business and Law, School of Design and Architecture, School of Health, Behavioral Sciences and Education, and School of Engineering, Computing and Informatics. The university offers master’s degrees in seven different majors offered for both male and female students. The degree programs offered by the University are developed in collaboration with International universities, and are fully licensed, and recognized by the Saudi Ministry of Education.

 

King Saud bin Abdulaziz University for Health Sciences

King Saud bin Abdulaziz University for Health Sciences (KSAU-HS) was opened in 2005 as the first public university in Saudi Arabia to specialize in medicine and health sciences. The main campus is in the east of Saudi Arabia’s capital Riyadh and there are two other campuses in Jeddah and Al-Ahsa.

Jeddah Campus hosts colleges of medicine, nursing, applied medical sciences, and sciences and health professions.

All of the campuses are located in King Abdulaziz medical cities, giving KSAU-HS clinical applications and training under health professionals. They are overseen by the Saudi National Guard of Health Affairs. KSAU-HS has a number of agreements for academic collaboration with international universities such as the University of Liverpool, University of Sydney, and South Alabama University.

 

Effat University

Effat University is the first non-profit private university for females in Saudi Arabia and one of the best Jeddah universities.

In 1999, the university started offering its first academic programs in English under the name of Effat College. And in January 2009, Effat College acquired University status as a private institution of higher education for women. Effat University has four colleges – Effat College of Business, Effat College of Architecture and Design, Effat College of Engineering, and Effat College of Science and Humanities. The four colleges house 13 undergraduate programs and 4 master’s degrees.

 

University of Jeddah

Established in 2014, the University of Jeddah carries the name of the Jeddah city of Saudi Arabia and recognized by the Ministry of Education. This university was founded as a national university aiming at spreading higher education in the western area of Saudi Arabia.

University of Jeddah (UJ) offers courses and programs leading to officially recognized higher education degrees such as bachelor’s degrees in several areas of study.
